‘Them before Us’

Psalm 127:3. ‘Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD.’

Matthew 18:6-7. “But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to sin, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were drowned in the depth of the sea.  Woe to the world because of offenses!  For offenses must come, but woe to that man by whom the offense comes.”

I am a member of Gideons UK, and one of our activities is taking school assemblies or R.E. lessons and offering copies of the New Testament and Psalms to the children.  About three years ago, I contacted the teacher in charge of the Year 7 pupils (11-12 years old) at a certain school to make an appointment to visit.  “Before you take an assembly,” he replied, “I want to see you.”

I drove to the school with a sinking heart, expecting to be asked, “What is the Gideon position on homosexuality,” or something like that.  In the event, it was quite different.  “How can you help us?” He asked.  He went on to say that 35% of his pupils were self-harming, a similar number of the girls were either anorexic or bulimic, and nationally, around 40% of 12-15 year-olds say they have suicidal thoughts.

The teacher put the blame for this squarely upon the ‘messy family lives’ of the children.  Many of them were being brought up by single parents with a succession of ‘uncles’ (or in a few cases ‘aunties’) coming to stay for a while and then disappearing again.  The children correctly felt themselves to be in the way and not wanted.  They preferred to be in school because that was where they found a degree of stability.

The school in question is not an inner-city establishment but is situated in rural Devon.  Nor is it unique; I have since found out that it is entirely typical of schools in the area.  And before long we shall have a new generation of youngsters growing up since the legalization of same-sex ‘marriage.’  These children will never have known their biological father or mother, never have known what it is to be in a real family with their own real parents.  Moreover, three years ago the tsunami of transgenderism had not burst upon us.  Children brought up by one parent do not know what it is to have proper male and female role-models.  So who can wonder that the number of children claiming to have ‘gender dysphoria’ has apparently risen by 4,000% in little over a year.

So may I encourage my readers to study this article and consider what support they might be able to give to it, not least in their prayers?  The newspapers in the UK are full of Brexit almost to the exclusion of anything else.  I have my own very firm views on that, but whether we are in or out of the E.U., so many of our children are growing up with depression and other mental illnesses because they lack the fundamental human right of a mother and a father.
