Two and a Half Cheers for Justin Welby

Proverbs 11:30. ‘The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and he who wins souls is wise.’
2 Timothy 4:2. ‘Preach the word!’

Regular readers of this blog will know that on several occasions I have criticized Justin Welby (Archbishop of Canterbury in case you didn’t know) for his failure to preach the Gospel and to foster evangelism. Well, the worm has turned and in his ‘Inaugural Lambeth Lecture’ last week he promoted evangelism and called for it to be made a priority within the Church of England.

Well! In the light of my previous criticisms, it would be very churlish of me to make any adverse comment now and I will not do so. I absolutely welcome this new focus by the Church of England and pray that God will bless its members’ efforts as they seek to reach the lost for Christ. I am not aware of what resources will be put into this effort or what training will be provided, but the longest journey starts with the first step and I am delighted that the Archbishop has put his best foot forward.

So why am I withholding half a cheer from the Archbishop? It is because I want to see Justin Welby put into practice what he has proposed in his lecture. His Easter address is coming soon. He has a unique opportunity to call the nation to repentance and to preach the Lord Jesus Christ and Him crucified. Will he use this opportunity to bring the Gospel before the nation or will we hear another wearisome talk on the economy or Wonga? Archbishop, it’s up to you!
