Helping those who hate the Lord.

2 Chron. 19:2. ‘And Jehu the son of Hanani the seer went out to meet him and said to Jehoshaphat, “Should you help the wicked and love those who hate the LORD? Therefore the wrath of God is upon you.”‘

For those outside the U.K. who may be unaware, the Christian Institute {1} is a charitable organization which campaigns for Christian values, lobbies Parliament and gives legal support to Christians who are sufferening harrassment on account of their faith. The Instutute has done many fine things and I, along with my church, have been pleased in the past to support it in various ways.

However, a recent e-mail from the Institute has greatly concerned me. It concerns the proposed ‘Anti-social Behaviour’ legislation which is currently being considered by Parliament. Part of it reads:

‘A new campaign group, called ‘Reform Clause 1: Feel Free To Annoy Me’, has been set up which is a joint initiative of The Christian Institute and the National Secular Society, with support from other civil liberty groups………..
We will let you know in due course how you can back the new Reform Clause 1 campaign and keep up to date with progress. In the meantime, please pray for us and for those we are working with inside and outside Parliament. And please visit our information hub on the anti-social behaviour Bill.’

So the Christian Institute is happy to work with the National Secular Society, which is dedicated to the complete marginalization and eventual extinction of Christianity within the UK. One wonders whether this is wise even on a human level. It reminds me of a famous limerick:

‘There was a young lady of Niger,
Who smiled as she rode on a tiger.
They returned from the ride
With the lady inside,
And the smile on the face of the tiger.’

Even more worryingly however, we are being urged to pray for the Secular Society and whatever other non-Christian groups may be involved. It is doubtless right that we should pray for these people in terms of their repentance and salvation, but we are clearly being asked to do more than that- to pray for the success of an alliance between God’s people and the devil’s. That is something that I cannot do.

I see no instance of such an alliance being blessed by God. The case of the alliance between Jehoshaphat and the house of Ahab resulted in immediate failure (2 Chron. 20:25-37) and in the longer term almost complete disaster (2 Chron. 22 & 23). Would we not be wiser to say to the Secular Society what Zerubbabel and Jeshua said to God’s enemies who wished to enter into an alliance with them, “You may do nothing with us……but we alone will build to the LORD God of Israel” (cf. Ezra 4:1-3)? If God is dead, then it is doubtless wise for us to seek allies wherever we can; but being of the conviction that He is very much alive and well able to fight His cause without the help of those who hate Him, I call upon the Christian Institute to think again.

  1. Outside of the fact that the tiger is about to have a terrible case of indigestion after consuming the true believers (just as the RC’s did, when they sought to digest the Waldensians, circa 1200 a. d. to 1600 a. d., which led to some priests falling on their faces before Waldensian pastors in modern Italy and begging their forgiveness). The same happened in the old USSR. After all, when you have a fellow show up in prison who believes God sent him there to win the inmates (and he, too, is one), it inspires his fellow inmates and produces believers like the one who wrote, One Day in The Life of Ivan Denisovich. After that, the USSR went to pieces, and I have on a video cassette the testimony of the former General War (title), who would have given the orders where to drop the nuclear bombs on America, about his conversion to the Christian Faith. We shall out last them our live them, and, if necessary, out die them, but we will win the whole earth and every soul in it along with all of those of a million billion planets for a thousand generations just so we can appreciate the humor and the truth of our Lord’s comment in Rev.7:9 in the end.

  2. Hello Dr Willingham,
    Thank you for your comment.
I do not at all mean to suggest that the Church of Christ, for which He shed His precious blood, can ultimately be defeated. We are promised by the Lord Himself that the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

No such promises, however, apply to the Christian Institute or similar bodies, nor for the apostate churches that compromise with the world. I greatly fear that The Institute will forfeit the blessing of God if it enters into alliances with those who hate Him.

  3. Ah! Mr. stpowen, I fear you might be right as to the ultimate end of compromise with reference to many “Christian” outfits and organizations as well as the apostate churches. However, the suggestions and encouraging promises of Scripture, recorded by Jonathan Edwards in his Humble Attempt which inspired the folks who launched the modern missionary movement, can still be pleaded for a visitation, even a Third Great Awakening beginning, hopefully, in this generation and reaching a thousand total (I Chron.16:15). That might put a Divine exclamation mark to the end of this world!

  4. Amen, Dr. Willingham!
How we need to be in prayer for God to bring revival to our poor benighted country! If you will read my articles under the heading of ‘revival’ you will find that I have written extensively about this.
