The Utter Madness of Hyper-separatism

The Utter Madness of Hyper-separatism
Eph. 4:1-3. ‘I therefore…..beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called, with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love, endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.’
Psalm 133:1. ‘Behold, how good and pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity.’

I have been informed of a Pastor (name withheld to protect the guilty) who has separated from his congregation.

Not because the members were guilty of any heresy- they are well-known as a godly people- but because they would not secede from their voluntary association.

Not because that voluntary association is in any way heretical- it is known for its conservative biblical stance- but because it is affiliated to Affinity.

Not because Affinity is an apostate organization- it has a clear, biblical Basis of Faith but because its leaders have contacts with evangelicals in mixed denominations.

Not because those evangelicals are all heretics- men like Vaughn Roberts and Christopher Ash are very orthodox in their beliefs- but because they associate with others in their denominations who are not evangelical.

Now I make that to be Five Stage Separation. It is madness! The devil must be rubbing his hands with glee.

  1. Dear Brother Martin,

Sadly, I must agree wholeheartedly with you concerning the foolish shepherd who has left his flock. He cannot claim that he is for a pure church and against mixed denominations because no church on this earth and this side of Glory is pure and all denominations are mixed and live in separation from their brethren. The pastor mentioned also believes that he has failed to shepherd those committed by God to him. He has interpreted his task as meaning his church must at all times follow his will, no matter in what degree of maturity they (or he) stand. So now he has convinced his own popish mind that he can drop all his God-given responsibilities and run away. Such a hireling should never be allowed to hurt another body of worshippers whether ‘mixed’ or ‘perfect’ again.

Of course Affinity has separated itself, too, from church life and strives to tempt people from serving their own church faithfully with their witness, time and money. It is not a church, nor even a denomination but what we call a para-church movement. This is a substitute church which strives to head and control those churches and individuals who are willing to have this para-church institution think and act for it. Thus it splits former associations of churches or denominations and separates individuals from their own responsibilities in their denominations. Indeed, it expects ordinary church members to finance their artificial ‘floor’ which they have placed at the very top of churches and denominations claiming they should be fed, clothed, kept and rewarded for their non-church leadership and power which they seek to enforce on churches and denominations. This is what makes the papacy so infernal and is the system of the Mafia.

However, if a brother or sister feels that Affinity is doing good in a particular field in his particular part of the country and no one else is, then surely he is free to support that particular witness. If members of his church, neighbourhood or house prayer meeting also attend Affinity gatherings, it would be folly indeed for him to throw them out. We are in the world and have a witness to the world and the world is not only in Affinity but in every assembly of Christians still in Adam and awaiting the resurrection. Furthermore, if churches and denominations were faithful to the Great Commission themselves, there would be no need for Affinity or the great bevy of para-church organisations that are ruining church life today.

    Best wishes in Christ,
