John Owen on the New Covenant

In my article on the New Covenant (1), I had occasion to critique a book by Matthew MacMahon, co-owner of the Puritan Board.  The book in question was A Simple Overview of Covenant Theology.

Now a fellow-blogger, Brandon Adams has done an excellent job exposing MacMahon’s faulty understanding of John Owen’s view of the covenants as seen in his (MacMahon’s) web article entitled ‘John Owen and the Covenant of Redemption.’

Brandon’s article may be found here.  http://contrast2.wordpress.com/2010/09/20/mcmahons-misrepresentation-of-john-owen/

Those who wish to read Owen’s views on the newness of the New Covenant without trawling through all his voluminous works should purchase  Covenant Theology from Adam to Christ (R.B.A.P. ISBN 0-9760039).  This volume contains Nehemiah Coxe’s work on the Adamic, Noahic and Abrahamic covenants and John Owen’s exposition of Hebrews 8:6-13 which includes his view on the differences between the Old (‘First’) and New covenants.  Although Coxe was a Particular Baptist and Owen a Paedobaptist, the book has a very satisfactory unity.

Note.

  1. Thanks for posting the link to the article. I had long thought that McMahon had misrepresented Owen and also highly recommend the book that you have referenced “Covenant Theology from Adam to Christ.”

    Good stuff!
